Philippe Black is a Belgian born photographic artist. After a Master in Modern Languages and a PhD in Literature and History at UCLouvain, he spent several years in Iceland before studying at Agnes Varda School of Photography in Brussels. \n\nThroughout his work he explores overarching themes of existence, such as death, grief, desire, memory, the weight of history, the dark corners of the human mind and the subtle powers of nature. <div align="center">\n\nII\nIn a Past Darkly\n(2017-2018)\n\nMy great-grandfather Nikolaus Beck was among the 1,000 officials and pro-Belgians who fled inland when the German army arrived and annexed East Belgium in May 1940. In occupied Brussels, while working within the Ministry of the Interior, he took an active part in the monthly reproduction and distribution of the underground press organ of the “Bec et Ongles” resistance group. Wanted by the German criminal investigation department, he hid first with an aunt in Verviers, then in Liège, where a resistance network protected him. In September 1943 he volunteered for the Armée de la Libération (AL) for the remainder of the war. As a Belgian soldier, he took part in the fightings in Herve, where armed resistance groups worked closely with the Allied troops that arrived in Belgium in September 1944. He then crossed the border at Aachen-Köpfchen together with British troops.
